Amid the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal, Instagram is now taking steps to allow users to have some control on their data. Up till now Instagram lacked data portability, however, the portal is soon going to allow that.

Instagram spokesperson told BGR India, “We are building a new data portability tool. You’ll soon be able to download a copy of what you’ve shared on Instagram, including your photos, videos and messages.” Not only will the tool be helpful for users in keeping a track of their information, it will also help Instagram comply with upcoming European GDPR privacy law that requires data portability.

Despite being around for almost eight years now, exporting data on Instagram has always been a task. It does not allow you to save images, or download the ones you have already posted. It only allows you to auto download the images and videos you put on Stories.

As of now, there is no clarity on whether the tool will allow you to only download your photos, videos, and messages; or if you’ll also be able to export your following and follower lists, Likes, comments, Stories, and the captions you share with posts. It’s also unclear whether photos and videos will export in the full resolution of what they are uploaded or displayed in, or whether they’ll be compressed.

Additionally, there is still no clear information on when the tool will be released. Though, as per media reports, it will likely launch within the next month.
