After blatantly copying the Stories feature from Snapchat, Instagram is adding Facebook s algorithm of who to follow suggestions to this new feature. Like the list of suggestions Facebook and Instagram give for the people you could follow, the app will now show you suggestions for its new Stories feature. Essentially, you will now see photo stories of people on Instagram from total strangers, which is Instagram s way of suggesting the people you may want to follow . In the new update, Instagram will start showing users a bar of Stories from people neither you follow, nor the ones who follow you, they could be absolute unknown people who Instagram thinks you should follow. This bar of Stories from stranger will reflect atop the Explore tab, reports TechCrunch. Some users have reportedly already gotten this new feature, but Instagram says it is being rolled out in phases. The suggestions feature works quite similar to how the suggestions on Facebook work, and it will be tailored and curated by an artificial intelligence system. Based on the people you are already following, and the topics that you show the most interest in, the app will suggest Stories of people you are otherwise not connected to. For instance, I follow a lot of dogs and animal Instagram accounts like puppysktech, videosbyanimals and huskuhusky, so accordingly the Stories I am suggested will be tailored as per my trend of the kind of accounts that I have been following.
The Stories suggestion tool might actually work pretty well for Instagram, given the stats about the popularity of the Explore tab that the company recently revealed. According to Instagram, a hundred million people visit the Explore tab every day. Instagram s Director of Product Management Blake Barnes told TechCrunch that some seek it out as the primary way they use Instagram. Some people view it as a dessert. He added, it has the early signs of being a product people love. Also read: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes to show off his home-assisting Jarvis AI next month
Instagram has constantly been working on increasing the time people spend on the app. The more people users follow, the more feed they would have, and they will stay glued to the app for that much more time. Recently, Instagram also personalized the Explore tab for users. The app was updated with new Picked for You channels in Explore. These channels feature videos that are categorized according to a user s favorites or most viewed topics and interest. For the browser version, Instagram launched a new Discover People feature, which enables users to discover other users easily with the help of little compass icon added to the top-right corner of the window.
Couple of months ago, Instagram also introduced a new algorithm, which customized the sequence of appearance of posts on the application. The algorithm update enables the best posts to show up first, instead of appearing in a chronological manner. The best posts are decided based on the category of posts most viewed by a user and based on that, the content a user is most likely to enjoy.
