IT peripheral maker Intex today launched its new flagship device the Aqua i7. The Android smartphone with a 5-inch full HD display is priced at Rs 21,900 and enters a market where competition is high from global and local players alike. We spent some time with the device today and here are our first impressions. Also Read - 70% mobile phone users in India switched brands in Q2: Report

At a glance, the device doesn t look very different from many of the rebadged Chinese smartphones out there with a plastic body and metal frame around it. But unlike many of them, the Aqua i7 doesn t feel cheap and the quality of the plastic body seemed quite good. Overall, the plastic body also helps in keeping the weight down and the phone felt quite light in our hands. The top houses a 3.5mm audio jack and a micro-USB port, while the volume rocker and power button are on the left and right respectively.

The Aqua i7 flaunts a 5-inch full HD display which supports 1280×1080 pixels resolution and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The display does a great job in reproducing colors and pictures in general looked crisp and sharp. Below the display you will find three capacitive keys for home, setting and back functions.

Talking of performance, the device is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6589T processor clocked at 1.5GHz and supplemented with 2GB of RAM. In the short time that we spent with the phone, the user interface seemed pretty smooth and even swiping on the phone-screen worked well. Additionally, the device features a 2,000mAh battery and offers 32GB of built-in storage. Unfortunately, there is no microSD card slot to expand the memory, but for those worrying about running out of space, Intex gives users 5GB of additional storage through Intex Cloud. As always, we will look into the real performance and battery implications in our detailed review.

Its photo clicking abilities include a 13-megapixel camera, which can record HD quality videos and also boasts a 5-megapixel camera at the front. Though the cameras performed well under ambient lighting conditions, we will reserve our judgment until we put it through our stringent review procedures.

On the software front, the device runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean and the company has crammed in a lot of novel features similar to the ones seen on phones from Micromax and Samsung like look away to pause videos, flip to mute the phone and auto call record among others. The phone also supports wireless display, which is quite similar to how Google s Chromecast works. Intex has also introduced Over the Air (OTA) updates on this phone via an app, which is a huge plus as you won t have to go to the service centre every time you need to update the phone s OS. Additionally, the company has also pre-loaded a bunch of apps like Hungama, Headlines Today, Intex Cloud, Movies and Zone, Matrabhasha, NQ Security and NQ Vault among others.

To conclude then, the phone is decently priced and does offer a lot in terms of software add-ons and overall performance. We will have a review up soon, where we will find out if this flagship device can survive the competitive market. Stay tuned.
