Intex today announced it will launch India’s first smartphone with MediaTek’s ¨true¨ octa-core processor. Earlier this year, MediaTek announced it would release an octa-core processor where all the eight cores would work simultaneously, unlike Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa processor where only a set of four cores work at any given time. The MT6592 features eight ARM Cortex A7 cores with Mali 450 GPU.
While Intex has not announced the name of the smartphone, it has revealed it will be a dual-SIM Android smartphone running on the octa-core chipset clocked at 1.7GHz. It will feature 2GB of RAM with 16/32GB of internal memory. Other features include a 13-megapixel backside illuminated rear camera, a 5-megapixel front facing camera and a 6-inch 720p IPS display. Intex further revealed that the phone will be just 7mm thin and would have a 2.6mm bezel.
Leaked MT6592 benchmarks indicate that the chipset would be marginally short of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and would easily compete with the Snapdragon 600 chipset as far as the processor performance goes. However, its power efficiency and network capabilities remain to be seen.
