Apple has finally started rolling out iOS 12 for iPhones, iPads and iPods. The new operating system comes with plenty of new features that not only improve the experience, but also help enhance the overall performance of the device. The best thing about it however is that it is compatible with older devices, ranging up to the iPhone 5S and iPad Mini 2.

If you haven’t updated your device, then you can do so by going into Software Update option, under General in the Settings app. While the OS might still look the same, here are 10 features you should checkout to get yourself better acquainted with iOS 12.

Performance improvements

With iOS 12, Apple has focused a lot on improving the performance with older devices. Apple claims that the new OS enables older devices to open apps twice as fast, and open the camera about 70 percent faster from the lockscreen. Navigation around the interface along with screen animations are also said to seem smoother this time around.

Group FaceTime

While Apple might seem late to offer the group calling feature, it is promising a much better experience with it. Group FaceTime supports video calling with up to 32 people simultaneously. Every participant is showcased in an individual tile, which the interface brings forward when that person is talking. There are plenty of other intuitive features included to make the group calling experience clutter free. Not just that, users also have the option to use Memoji and other stickers while making these calls.

Siri Shortcuts

With iOS 12, Apple is also building up on automated features with the new Siri Shortcuts. The feature allows you to carryout multiple tasks across applications using only one single command for Siri. While there are some suggestions pre-configured, you can also customize and create your own shortcuts. The possibilities are endless!

Animoji and Memoji

Apple is also improving Animoji features that it had introduced with the iPhone X last year. Now, the avatar can also track your wink and movement of the tongue. Apple has also added new avatars including a Koala, Tiger, Ghost and a T.Rex. However, the big addition here is Memoji, which allows you to make your own animated avatar. It is easy to create and can be customized in detail to match your style. Along with FaceTime, Memoji can also be used in iMessage.

Notification management

Notification management was one of the pain points with iOS, and it’s good to see Apple work on that with iOS 12. Now, all the notifications from one app are clubbed together, which should help make the barrage of notifications easier to manage. It’s also possible to silent notifications for apps individually, right form the notification center or in the Settings app.

Screen time

In order to curb smartphone addiction, Apple like many other tech giants is also working on integrating digital wellbeing features into their operating systems. iOS 12 comes with Screen Time, which enables users to analyze how much time they spend on their smartphone in a day and on what apps. Besides that, the feature can also be used to set limits for screen time and app usage as well. However, it’s still up to the user to stick to these deadlines.

Measure app and AR features

At WWDC 2018, Apple also introduced ARKit 2.0 to developers and the kind of augmented reality experience it can help bring to iPhones and iPads. There’s now support for better tracking, 3D object detection and multi-player AR gaming. Apple in partnership with Pixar has also created a new USDZ file format, which allows users to share AR files with one another, like photos.

While the best of these features is yet to come, to give users an idea of its capabilities, Apple has included a new Measure app in iOS 12, which allows you to measure objects around you by the simply tapping and dragging a virtual scale on them.

Photos app improvements

Photos app has been further optimized to help make it easier to manage and view pictures. Apple has added a new ‘For You’ tab, which creates a personalized album of your best shots. It can also suggest effects and filters and pick the right pictures to share with people. The app also prompts the person who has received the images to share the photos from their library that have been clicked at the same event.

Voice Memos

The Voice Memos app has got a huge design overhaul with some added functionality as well. The redesign makes it easier to sort through all your recordings and also brings in iCloud support. Now, with the app available on iPads too, you can access your recordings across your devices anything anywhere.

Password management

Apple is also improving on the security with iOS 12. The new OS will help you create stronger passwords for different services on the device. It also stores the password safely in Keychain. Not just that, users will also be able to share passwords across devices and even ask Siri to remind them about a specific password when needed.
