IPL 2017 engages 120 million people on Facebook, records 350 million conversations

Facebook Live was extensively used by the IPL teams to share moments with their fans.

The most popular cricket league in India, the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded on May 21 with the Mumbai Indians winning the title cup. Considering the immense popularity cricket itself in India, and the IPL together, the event collectively managed to make a strong influence on Facebook. The IPL 2017 engaged 120 million people in conversation on Facebook, which is the highest ever recorded for an IPL season. Just like last year, Virat Kohli, captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team was the most talked about player on Facebook this IPL season this season as well. Amongst the teams, Mumbai Indians were the most talked about. The fact that this IPL season recorded the most number of conversations on Facebook was because of the continuous posts shared. To begin with, the IPL posted videos of team warm-ups before each match on Facebook throughout the 47-day tournament.

Some special moments of the league and off-the-field activities were also shared on Facebook. The most memorable moment shared was of Shah Rukh Khan and his son Abram at the opening match of his team, Kolkata Knight Riders. The tournament was closed on Facebook with a video of the championship trophy presentation.

While Facebook already serves as a major platform to connect with people, the one feature that helped engage many viewers was Facebook Live. And the IPL teams used Facebook Live to its full extent. Mumbai Indians showed their victory celebration through Facebook Live. Audiences could take part in their celebrations of cake cutting with Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad showing their moments on Facebook Live. More activities included an exercise session in the pool broadcast on Facebook Live by Sunrisers Hyderabad and an on pitch interview by the Delhi Daredevils. Shikhar Dhawan even conducted a Facebook Live Q&A for his fans. Media publications also made good use of Facebook Live to provide exclusive match commentary and analysis and also engage fans. The IPL teams also shared many videos of their activities during the IPL season. Some notable ones include the prank war video by Kings XI Punjab featuring Marcus Stoinis and Manan Vohra. Yuvraj Singh also joined in the fun by sharing a behind-the-scenes look of a commercial shoot and poking fun at his teammate Ashish Nehra. Apart from the teams, there were team members, cricket legends who also shared their moments of fun on Facebook. These include Sachin Tendulkar spotting the real Malinga in Rajkot and Pretty Zinta celebrating her team s victory on the bus. Virender Sehwag also shared a lighthearted moment from the IPL opening ceremony while Keshav Bansal, Gujarat Lions owner released a video series entitled ChaiWithKeshav .
