Debating on optical illusions is the new Internet culture. After The Dress controversy divided the web world into two teams, a cat is raking up new fights. An image of a cat on a fleet of stairs is now the talk of the town, as netizens cannot make up their mind if it is walking up or down. The picture, at its confusing best has got architecture enthusiasts, curious minds and plain net addicts pouring over the image to answer the big important question – Is the cat going up or down? Cats, in general, are a big deal on the Internet, with cat videos of absolute no importance getting a lot of hits. Even lists that include cat images are viral in nature. This cat in perfect poise, going up (or down?) is no different. Add to it, ‘The Dress-like dilemma’, and it was bound to break the Internet. The image was first uploaded by a 9Gag user, and has generated 3,674 responses so far. The people who see the cat going down argue that they can see the front edge of the stairs and the bright patch behind the pet, while the ones who claim to see the cat going up say that they are looking down onto a grip strip and claim the bright patch is the floor at the bottom.
Many attempted to find an answer of course, and a 9Gag user commented that, “It’s going down. When cats go down the stairs, they raise their tail to maintain balance. When they go up, the tails remain down cause balance isn’t an issue.”
Jorge Rodriguez had a different opinion, and he commented on a YouTube video explaining, “At the bottom of the staircase appears to be a floor. That “concrete-like build up” on the sides of the ledge is perpendicular to the top of the stairs.”
Another YouTube user Asango commented, “The stairs could as well have stone blocks giving the cement its form. There are definitely small stones in the cement of these stairs, meaning that the material on the side we face was a fluid when the stairs were built. Those stairs could not be made like this if the picture was taken from downstairs.”
We still do not have a definitive answer though. What do you think?
