Yahoo’s Marrisa Mayer may have another company in her target. This time it is local recommendations service Foursquare. While there are conflicting reports on this, TechCrunch cites internal sources who claim that the’ deal is as good done’ for $900 million.
As soon as the publication broke this story, Re/code published a counter story claiming that its sources from both the companies have confirmed that no such deal is on the table. There has been enough speculation floating since a long time about CEO Marissa Mayer’s interest in Foursquare.
She reportedly kept a close eye on both Tumblr and Foursquare while working at Google, and one of the most prominent thing she did while CEO at Yahoo was acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion two years ago.
Foursquare, founded six years ago, is of value to Yahoo for its location database. Social giant Twitter is also in a deal with Foursquare to power its own geo-tagging services, testifying the company’s huge strength in data. If Yahoo were to gain access to this pool of information, it could strengthen its social value with Tumblr already in its kitty.
Reports surrounding this possible acquisition are at its hazy best, and all we can do at this time, is let rumors flutter. Yahoo has acquired 112 companies so far.
