The 27-hour countdown, which kicked off yesterday afternoon at 1:56PM, is now set to launch today. The GSLV-F08 is planned to launch from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota at 4:56PM IST. This launch also marks the twelfth flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-F08, and its sixth flight with indigenous Cryogenic upper stage. The GSAT-6A, is very similar to GSAT-6, that is a high power S-band communication satellite, that is built on I-2K satellite bus with a mission life of about ten years. GSLV-F08, weighing 415.6 tonnes with a height of 49.1 metre comes with notable improvements like induction of High Thrust Vikas Engine, electromechanical actuation system in place of electro-hydraulic actuation system.
The main criteria behind the satellite is to provide mobile communication to India through multi-beam coverage facility. Additionally, the satellite will also provide a platform for developing technologies such as demonstration of 6 m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques that could be useful in satellite based mobile communication applications.
ISRO Chairman K Sivan reportedly said that the GSAT-6A would be followed by the launch of navigation satellite which will be in the next fiscal.
In the recently announced Union Budget, the Department of Space has been tasked with three earth observation space crafts that ready for launch, four Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) flights, one each of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkII and Mk III.
