Apple is reportedly working on a car. If that wasn’t evident from the recent hires the company has made; WSJ’s report that claims that the company’s electric vehicle resembles a minivan and Apple was in talks with car manufacturers; and a Reuter’s report that revealed that the company was learning self-driving cars, the New Yorker’s profile of Apple design chief Jonathan Ive adds more weight to such claims.

In the 17,000-word profile, Ian Parker, the interviewer had Ive talk about several car-centric topics, including his particular dislike of the existing lineups from different leaders in the automotive space.

“‘There are some shocking cars on the road,” Ive said. “One person’s car is another person’s scenery.” Critiquing the design of a car that passed by him, Ive added, “It is baffling, isn’t it? It’s just nothing, isn’t it? It’s just insipid.”

“I’ve always loved the big old-school square Bentleys. The reasons are entirely design-based. But because of the other connotations I resisted and resisted, and then I thought, this is the most bizarre vanity, because I’m concerned that people will perceive me to be this way—I’m not,” Ive offered.

Last week, a report on WSJ revealed that the company had made a number of hires and repositioning inside the company to get the right minds to work on its car — codenamed Titan. As per the report, Marc Newson is working on the design of the car, where he is joined by former Ford engineer and current Apple product design VP Steve Zadesky. The company has also hired Johann Jungwirth, the head of Mercedes-Benz’s Silicon Valley research and development unit. He joined Apple last September. The report claimed last week that the company was in talks with several car manufacturers for high-end cars.

Another report from last claimed that Apple was studying self-driving electric car and was talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers. “Fully automated driving is an evolution. Car makers will slowly build the market for autonomous cars by first releasing connected and partially automated cars,” Reuters reported. “Apple is interested in all the potential ways you can evolve the car; that includes autonomous driving.”

Ive’s profile offers a few more interesting tidbits about Ive’s love of cars, including the car he owns — Aston Martin DB4 — and that he regularly attends the vintage car show Goodwood Festival of Speed with Australian designer friend Marc Newson — who himself has previously designed a car concept for Ford, and was hired by Apple last year.

While Ive didn’t exactly really confirm Apple’s supposed ongoing interest in car, his likes and dislikes give us an idea of the kind of car he might design.
