Have you ever been told off for using your smartphone at dinner time? Well, now you can do it officially, if you manage to get hold of the new KFC and Mountain Dew Gamer’s Box 2.0. This strange contraption is essentially a lunchbox and a gamepad for your smartphone in one, which is quite possibly the strangest hybrid device I have ever come across. Opening the box, you will find one KFC Chicken Zinger burger, one serving of chicken popcorn, fries and a Choco Pie. Outside, you’ll find a can of Mountain Dew attached to the top. Now that we’re done with the lunchbox element of the package, let’s move on to the gadget bits of the Gamer’s Box 2.0. Also Read - Yu-Gi-Oh! Simply put, the Gamer’s Box 2.0 is a wireless gamepad for Android and iOS smartphones that looks like, well, a gamepad sawed in half and separated by a lunch box. Some of the controls are on the left, while others are on the right, and the top of the box has a grippy mount to horizontally place your smartphone.
Once you’ve followed the pairing procedure and connected your smartphone to the controller, you can then start using it to play games in much the same way that you would use a handheld gaming console such as the Sony PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS. The device is officially compatible with a handful of games on Android and iOS, but will realistically work with most games you can download off the App Store or Google Play store. We tried it with Asphalt 8: Airborne, Muffin Knight and a few others, and it worked fairly well with all. It’s particularly useful with games that use straightforward directional controls, such as racing, role playing games and first person shooters.
The device itself has a whole list of buttons on it, including two joysticks, a d-pad, four selection buttons, two trigger buttons and a whole list of smaller buttons for selections as well as media controls. It’s a decent gamepad controller, and switches on and pairs easily with most phones. Bluetooth connectivity means that the device will need frequent charging, and a micro-USB port is present on the device for this. Unfortunately though, there’s no bundled cable for charging, so you’ll have to use your phone’s cable or get one separately if your phone doesn’t charge using micro-USB.
Now, if you like the sound of being on the phone while eating chicken burgers and drinking fizzy yellow drinks, you’re probably wondering how you can get your hands on the Gamer’s Box 2.0. You can’t just walk into your local KFC and buy it; the limited edition device will be given as a prize for an online contest conducted by KFC and Mountain Dew in India. Only ten units of the box will be up for grabs, so stay tuned to KFC and Mountain Dew social media channels for information on how to participate.
