Today, May 1, is celebrated as Labour Day, and Google has put up a doodle marking the occasion. The annual holiday celebrates the achievements of workers, with origins in the labour union movement.

In India, May 1 is often referred to as ‘May Day’, and it was first celebrated back in 1923 courtesy of the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. The day is also known as ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’, and is an important occasion in states like West Bengal.

The origins of Labour Day date back to the late 19th century, when the trade union and labour movements were growing in the US. The date May 1 was selected to commemorate the aftermath of a bombing at a labour protest against the police in Chicago in 1886.

Labour Day is also known as International Workers’ Day or Workers’ Day in many countries. In some countries, the particular day is celebrated on a separate day, but the significance remains the same. The day has often seen protests by various socialist and communist groups, and is an important holiday in communist countries like China, North Korea, Cuba and the former Soviet Union countries.
