With the TV manufacturers aiming solely at compelling consumers to buy a new television set, Dolby Vision is reportedly aiming at something big- revolutionizing the TV industry.
The audio giant is reportedly lining up TV and medias partners for ‘Dolby Vision’, which is a set of technologies that cover everything from the mastering process to displays showing rich details visible to the human eye and a dramatic increase in brightness that is closer to reality. Dolby’s executive director of technology strategy, Pat Griffis explained that currently video is created and displayed using a reference peak brightness level that is much too small, close to 500 nits in modern-day TV, but human eye is used to seeing more than that, about 1.6 billion nits. Since, using contemporary technology in the same range of brightness can’t be accurately reproduced, Dolby has tried to develop technology for the human eye.
The company built a 1080p, liquid-cooled experimental display with a backlight made up of 18,000 RGB LEDs with a peak brightness of 4,000 nits, which provided improved contrast and dynamic range.
The report said that the real power lied in the Dolby Vision signal, and the company would be providing reference displays and software plugins so companies can start right away.
Companies that have been signed up for the Dolby Vision signal include Sharp, TCL, and Vizio along with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, and Microsoft’s Xbox Video, the report added.
