Reports earlier this month claimed that Lava was planning on launching the next-generation Android One smartphones in India on July 14. The date came and went by without a launch, but the report wasn t too far from the truth. The Indian smartphone vendor has sent out media invites for a launch event next week on July 27, where it is expected to launch the next-gen Android One smartphone. Earlier this month, an unannounced Lava smartphone was spotted online called the Iris X5 4G that is likely to be the next-gen Android One smartphone. As per the leak, the smartphone sports a 4.6-inch HD (1280 720 pixels) display, and is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor paired with Mali-T720 GPU and 2GB of RAM.
Additionally, the smartphone is also said to feature 16GB internal storage, 12-megapixel rear camera, 7-megapixel selfie camera, LTE support, and on the software front, runs on Android 5.1 out-of-the box.
Reports also claim that Google is changing tactics after the rather cold reception the first generation Android One smartphones received. Unlike before, when OEMs had no say in the hardware of the Android One smartphone, Google this time deeply involved Lava in production to enhance efficiency of the smartphone. It used Lava s expertise and its understanding of the smartphone market to develop the hardware and have even co-created custom apps and services for making the new Android One device optimal.
With the specifications and features looking like a big upgrade over the first-generation Android One smartphones, it is also going to have an effect on the pricing. Where the first-generation smartphones were priced around the Rs 6,000 mark, Lava s Android One smartphone is expected to be priced around Rs 12,000.
