Even as smartphones are growing in popularity in the country, there’s still a big market for feature phones in the country. Though, the price gap between entry-level smartphones and feature phones has continued to narrow. While brands are focusing on the budget and entry-level smartphone segments, some still are looking to tap the existing feature phone market. Indian smartphone company Lava today introduced a new ‘Metal Series’ of feature phones with the launch of the Lava Metal 24. Priced at Rs 2,000, the feature phone is available across retail stores and multi-brand outlets in India. Lava also claims to be the first company to offer a feature phone with a metal body. The Lava Metal 24 comes with two color options of black and gun metal. The Lava Metal 24 comes with a metal back finish with the camera lens placed horizontally on the top end. The Lava Metal 24 measures 122x51x11mm and comes with features like FM with recording, internet browsing, and USB-PC connectivity. For entertainment, the phone comes pre-loaded with games like Snake and Need of Speed .
The Lava Metal 24 feature phone sports a 2.4-inch QVGA (240×320 pixels) display. Under the hood of the phone, runs a MTK6261D processor along with support for expandable storage up to 32GB via microSD card slot. The Lave Metal 24 phone sports a 1.3-megapixel rear camera with flash which allows for video recording and digital zoom as well. For power, the phone is equipped with a 1,000mAh battery. The connectivity options phone include dual-SIM support, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB.
As said earlier, India still has a big market for feature phones. According to recent CMR report, mobile handset shipments are expected to reach 256 million this year and feature phones would contribute 59 percent of the overall market. The future for feature phones may soon get a new direction with Reliance Jio s upcoming plans. According to a report by ET, Reliance Jio is now planning to launch a new range of feature phones that will be priced as low as Rs 1,000. These affordable feature phones would come bundled with unlimited voice and data calling. The report further quotes a source as saying, Jio wants to tap all the segments in the country and sees huge potential in the rural areas, which it now aims to tap with VoLTE feature phones. Reliance will reportedly launch two feature phones that will be priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500, and are expected to be launched early next year. These feature phones will hold functional similarities with smartphones and will also include the use of data to access the internet and make calls. The only thing that will keep the phone in the feature segment would be the touchscreen.
