Blank spaces are good! At least that s what former celebrity couple Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris believe. Recently, the two made their break-up official to the world by deleting each other s photographs from their Instagram accounts. They may be world famous celebrities, but this is how most millennials now behave since they literally live every moment of their life out of their smartphone s lens. And to get someone out of your life, you ve got to pull them out out of your digital life too, because in today s time, if not more, social media profiles are almost as important as the ‘real life’. Now, when you have decided to part your ways with your person , there are some important measures you need to follow. To make the process of moving on simpler for yourself and the other person, there are some necessary alterations you must make to your digital life. First of all, make a tiny mental note of all the social media platforms you were connected with them on. The most popular ones are WhatsApp messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Gmail. Here are some ways you can keep them away from your social media accounts. It s highly unlikely that you and your ex weren t on each others Facebook friend list. Therefore, you must begin this entire exercise by deleting your ex from your friendlist. Alter your privacy controls, make all your posts and photos visible to only your friends. You can also customize your settings to make sure that particular someone cannot see your posts, in case you choose not to delete them from your profile, yet keep them away from your life.
Further, now that you have these Facebook memories digging out the On this day posts, you really don t want a throw back from the past of your check-ins and photos with these exes. While you would have to manually remove the photos that you would want to remove from your profile, there is an easy way to remove selected check-ins. To do that, go to your profile, on the right edge just under your cover image, you would notice a More option, tap on that and select check-in from the drop down. This would lead you to a list of all the places you have checked-in. Now all the places you have been with your ex to, just get rid of them.
Then again, if these don t work, Facebook gives you the power to completely block a person from your profile if they are getting too much on your nerves or if they are abusing you in any way. If you need some distance from the social media for a while, you can also chose to go into the Stealth mode and make your Facebook profile absolutely invisible to anyone and everyone on the social media.
Another important platform to make changes is WhatsApp. The online messaging app allows you to block any user you wish not to speak to. If you have removed your ex s contact from your phone, but they continue to message you, WhatsApp would automatically prompt you to Block/Spam/Add their contact. You can also go to Settings>Account>Privacy>Blocked>Add New to include the contact of your ex in the list. Also in the Privacy Settings you can also change the Status of you WhatsApp aaccount and change it to My Contacts , so as to only allow the people whose number you have saved on your contact list to be able to look you up. That would disable any unknown contact to be able to look you up on WhatsApp.
Similarly Twitter allows you to Mute contacts, so that you stop receiving any notifications from that particular handle. Then again, like all other social media platform, Twitter too allows you to block or report spam against a user. Likewise, you can also block a contact on Snapchat, on the left-most drawer of recent contacts, tap and hold on a contact, from the pop-up, tap on the settings icon, and choose either of the Remove Friend or Block option.
Now if you want to follow the Swift-Harris drill, you can wipe your Instagram account off of your ex s pictures. No picture, no throwback! Also, in Settings, toggle on the Private Account feature, so that once you and your ex have unfollowed each other, or you block a profile, he/she can no longer look at your posts.
Now, you almost forgot Gmail, didn t you? Even though while you were dating Gmail would have been the last place you spoke, but like they say, when you are doing something, do it right. While other emailing services allow you to block particular mail IDs, Gmail lets you apply a filter to particular IDs, so they are right away directed to spam/trash before they reach you. Go to Settings on your Gmail, select Filters and Blocked Addresses, this would allow to direct incoming mails from selected email address to spam or trash or as you please, or entirely block them.
Lastly, love makes you do all kinds of stupid things, one of which is exchanging your passwords. If you have done that, make sure you change your passwords of all social media accounts. If you need a guide, here is how you can create a strong password that is difficult to break into.
