Lenovo P2 vs Lenovo P1: Here’s what’s new

The Lenovo P2 brings great battery life and the same efficiency of its predecessor, the Lenovo P1. But what’s the difference between the two devices?

Lenovo has launched the new P2 in India at a price of Rs 16,999. The phone will go on sale at 11:59pm on 11th January 2017 exclusively on Flipkart. The phone has been launched a little over a year after its predecessor, the Lenovo P1, which also boasted of a big battery and a focus on energy optimization. We’ve compared the differences between the two devices to show you what’s new in the Lenovo P2. Also Read - Samsung and LG confirm presence at in-person CES 2022

Design: The Lenovo P2 looks a lot like the P1, from the fingerprint sensor integrated into the home key to the block-like shape of the device. The P2 is, however, a fair bit slimmer and lighter than the P1. The layout of the buttons and ports is similar as well, although the P2 has a more traditional hybrid SIM tray than the P1, which had its SIM tray at the top of the device under the small plastic cover. The battery mode slider also looks a bit different, and Lenovo does away with the ‘Vibe’ branding that some of its older phones sported. Both phones have 5.5-inch full-HD screens, but the P2 has a Super AMOLED screen as opposed to the IPS-LCD screen on the P1. This will have a positive effect on battery life, as the AMOLED screen will use less power, while maintaining color and detail. Specifications: The biggest change in the specifications sheet is the use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, upgraded from 2015’s popular Snapdragon 615. Although the 625 uses the same octa-core layout with eight A53 cores as the 615, the chipset is clocked a bit higher and fabricated using the 14nm process. This will ensure better performance and improved energy efficiency, allowing for better battery life. One of the biggest problems users faced with the Snapdragon 615 was heating and the new SoC addresses that aspect adequately. The RAM has also been doubled from 2GB to 4GB, while internal storage remains the same at 32GB. On the software front, the Lenovo P2 runs Android Marshmallow, while the P1 ran Android Lollipop. Additionally, while both phones support 4G connectivity, the P2 is VoLTE enabled out of the box. Also Read - Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon Review: Stylish, Slim, Super Performer

Battery: The Lenovo P2 gets a small battery upgrade, with a relatively larger 5,100mAh unit as compared to the 4,900mAh unit on the P1. Combined with the more efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, this is expected to boost battery life by a bit more than the theoretical 4 percent increase that the battery size would afford it. There’s also a larger 24W charger included in the box, which uses proprietary charging technology to quickly charge up the Lenovo P2, up from the 14W charger on the P1. The battery saver switch returns to the Lenovo P2, and flicking it upwards will immediately put the Lenovo on battery saver mode. This feature is available even on the Lenovo P1, and completely shuts down all phone functions that are non-essential, leaving only calling, contacts, SMS, clock, calendar, calculator and the radio usable. Additionally, the Lenovo P2 is also capable of reverse-charging other devices, just like the P1.

Fingerprint sensor and home button: While the physical home key and fingerprint sensor remain unchanged, a key difference is that the sensor can now read up to five stored fingerprints, up from just two on the Lenovo P1. Another key change is in the Android software keys, which are now on-screen, apart from the physical home button itself (on the P1, the keys are capacitive and placed on either side of the home button). The home button also works with gestures, similar to how the Lenovo Z2 is. You can now deactivate the on-screen keys altogether, and set customizable gestures that allow you to input back and menu/multitasking commands using just the single home key. On the whole, the Lenovo P2 brings meaningful and useful upgrades on nearly every front, representing a genuine improvement going from the P1 to the P2. Check out our full review of the Lenovo P2.
