Lenovo today launched the S860, which it had announced along with the S660 and the S850, at MWC in February. Priced at Rs 21,500, the S860 will be up against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 which too brings similar specifications on-board and is available for Rs 22,999. We compare the two smartphones on the basis of their specifications to know which offers a greater value in this price range. Display: The S860 comes with a 5.3-inch 720p display to take on Samsung s slightly smaller 5.25-inch display with the same resolution. In terms of pixel density, there hardly is a difference between the pixel densities of the phones as the display on S860 crams in 277ppi and the Galaxy Grand 2 has 280ppi, which would not make a major difference.
Processor: Both the phones come with quad-core processors, however from different chipset makers. Samsung s Galaxy Grand 2 is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, while the S860 runs on a 1.3GHz MediaTek 6582 quad-core chipset.
Memory: The memory size is the major differentiator between the two phones, considering that the Samsung s has a smaller RAM size at 1.5GB and internal memory of 8GB, while the Lenovo s offers 2GB of RAM and double the internal memory at 16GB. However, the Galaxy Grand 2 still gets an edge over the S860 by offering an option to expand the internal memory space using a microSD card. The S860, on the other hand, lacks a microSD card slot.
Camera: On the photography front, both the phones come with 8-megapixel rear cameras with auto-focus and flash, and support HDR, but vary slightly in terms of front-facing camera. Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has a higher 1.9-megapixel secondary camera than the 1.6-megapixel on the Lenovo S860, which should not make much difference in the photo quality.
Battery: In this department, the Lenovo S860 leaps ahead of Samsung s Galaxy Grand 2 by housing a massive 4,000mAh battery, which the company claims can last for more than a day, and offer up to 28.5 days of talk time on 2G and up to 40 days on 3G. The Galaxy Grand 2 on the other hand has a 2,600mAh battery which can pull off a day of moderate use.
Android OS: These smartphones run on different versions of the Android Jelly Bean, which hardly makes a difference in overall user-experience. The Galaxy Grand 2 offers the newer 4.3 Jelly Bean flavour while the Lenovo S860 runs on 4.2 Jelly Bean version, wrapped under their respective UI.
To conclude, there is very little separating the Galaxy Grand 2 and the S860. The Galaxy Grand 2 has a microSD card slot while the Lenovo S860 offers a massive battery. Beyond that, the two devices are quite evenly matched.
