The affordable and mid-range smartphone segment is now getting cluttered. Beyond price and specifications battle, today, the competition is more about the overall package, including the latest operating system, user interface, features, battery capacity and camera quality. Recently, Lenovo launched its Vibe K5 Plus smartphone in India, and Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 3. With camera being one of the main features people look for when buying a smartphone, here s a shootout to compare the photo quality offered by both smartphones. The camera interface on both smartphones is pretty slick, minimalistic and easy to use. Decent lighting indoors:

Under decent lighting conditions, the Vibe K5 Plus seemed to offer a better performance. We had no issues with focusing and photos looked pretty decent. The camera is able to capture accurate colors and negligible amount of noise is visible. However, we cannot say the same thing about the Redmi Note 3. We had issues while focusing on the subject and had to tap on the screen for at least three to four times to lock the focus. Despite trying it for a couple of times, we ended up with shots that looked blurry and good amount of noise is also visible with 100 percent crop.

Close-ups indoors:

We took close up shots of a keychain, a digital watch and a toy to check the camera quality. The Redmi Note 3 was able to capture decent shots with sober looking colors. The depth of field offered in the toy photo is also pretty good. The Vibe K5 Plus, on the other hand, was able to capture good photos with details. While the toy photo offers decent depth of field, it does look a little washed out and grainy, mostly due to the auto-white balance.

Bright lighting outdoors:

In bright lighting condition outdoors, both smartphones offer decent results. The colors look good, photos look detailed and just little bit of graininess is noticeable with 100 percent crop.

Redmi Note 3

This is one area where Vibe K5 Plus performs better than the Redmi Note 3. The selfies clicked from the Lenovo smartphone are able to capture decent colors and skin tones. However, we cannot say the same about the Redmi Note 3 as the skin tones just go haywire in same lighting conditions.

Dark room with flash:

We also shot a couple of photos almost dark room to check the capabilities of the camera and flash. Again, the Vibe K5 Plus performs slightly better than the Redmi Note 3. Its flash is powerful and lights up the entire frame, colors and details also look good.

Redmi Note 3

Overall, we pick the Vibe K5 Plus over Redmi Note 3 as it offers slightly better quality in nearly all lighting conditions. Not that the Redmi Note 3 is bad, but even with a slightly higher resolution and lower aperture, the performance is slightly inferior to the Vibe K5 Plus.

The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is priced at Rs 8,499, whereas Xiaomi s Redmi Note 3 is priced at Rs 9,999 (16GB storage + 2GB RAM) and Rs 11,999 (32GB storage + 3GB RAM).
