Lenovo has sent out media invites for an event on May 10, which will mark the debut of its online-only brand ZUK in India. The brand was launched in China last year to essentially counter the rise of Xiaomi. The first smartphone to launch under this brand is likely to be the ZUK Z1, which launched in China last year. In India though, it could be called the ‘Lenovo Z1 powered by ZUK’. In terms of design, the Z1 doesn’t look like any of the smartphones currently available on Lenovo‘s portfolio. The front is covered with a glass that extends to the metallic edges, while the back is made up of plastic and is not removable. One of the talking points is the operating system, and the Z1 runs on Cyanogen OS 12.1 based on Android Lollipop 5.1. In other words, in India Cyanogen OS is no longer exclusive to Micromax’s YU smartphones.
Back in 2014, Cyanogen entered into an exclusive partnership with Micromax for the Indian market, which resulted in OnePlus having to opt for its in-house Oxygen OS on its smartphones. The Chinese company has since also parted ways with Cyanogen. With Z1 set to run on Cyanogen OS, seems like the exclusive partnership is no longer, err, exclusive.
Lenovo ZUK Z1 specifications, features: The smartphone features a 5.5-inch 1080p display, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 chipset, which is a surprising choice since it is a tad dated by today’s standards. The smartphone also features 3GB of RAM, and 64GB internal storage, but no option for expansion.
On the photography front, the smartphone features a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Also on offer is a 4,100mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button and connectivity options like dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, and USB Type-C port.
While we will have to wait till the launch event, the ZUK Z1 is available in China with a price tag of 1,799 Yuan or Rs 18,300 approximately. Around this price range it will have to face off against the likes of Motorola Moto X Play, OnePlus 2 and the Nexus 5X among others.
