LG G4 vs Samsung Galaxy S6 vs HTC One M9+: Specifications, features compared

Earlier today, LG finally launched its flagship LG G4 in India. As you would expect, the smartphone will go up against rival flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the HTC One M9+ to name a few. We put the three flagships in a comparison of specifications and features to see which one of them comes up top.

The LG G4 being the newest smartphone among the trio, is also the costliest at Rs 51,000. The Galaxy S6 and the One M9+ were launched at Rs 49,900 and Rs 52,500 respectively. But they are now available for lesser on e-commerce sites Rs 41,900 and Rs 48,999 respectively.

Despite boasting a 5.5-inch screen, the LG G4 dimensions are surprisingly compact. It measures 148.9, while the Galaxy S6 and the One M9+ measure 143.4 70.5 6.8mm and 151x72x9.6mm respectively.

Use of a polycarbonate body keeps the smartphones weight in check and it only weighs 155 grams, which is less than the One M9+ s 168 grams. The Galaxy S6 is the lightest of the trio at 138 grams.

On the design front, all three smartphones are quite distinct. The new LG G4 features a polycarbonate body with a genuine leather back panel and back-mounted navigation buttons. The Galaxy S6 is one of the most premium offerings in the company s lineup boasting glass and metal in abundance. The One M9+, on the other hand, persists with the aluminum unibody design with curved edges and dual-tone color scheme.

The three flagships flaunt eyeball-busting QHD displays with a resolution of 2560 1440 pixels. They are however differentiated by the size and the kind of display. Where the G4 features a 5.5-inch screen with an IPS Quantum display, the Galaxy S6 and the One M9+ feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED and 5.2-inch Super LCD3 displays respectively.

All the three displays are scratch and shatterproof thanks to Gorilla Glass 4 protection.

Being flagships, there is plenty of power under the hood to ensure all the apps and services run smoothly. The G4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core chipset paired with Adreno 418 GPU. The Galaxy S6 is powered by Samsung s own Exynos 7420 (1.5GHz Cortex-A53 quad-core+ 2.1GHz Cortex-A57 quad-core) octa-core chipset paired with Mali-T760MP8 GPU. The One M9+, on the other hand, is powered by a 2.2GHz Mediatek MT6795T octa-core chipset paired with PowerVR G6200 GPU.

All the three processors are paired with 3GB of RAM each.

The Galaxy S6 is at a huge disappointment since it doesn t have a microSD card slot. Instead it comes in multiple storage variants 32/64/128GB. The LG G4 and the One M9+ both come with 32GB onboard memory, which can be further expanded using a microSD card.

The Galaxy S6 is however bundled with 100GB of free Microsoft OneDrive storage. The LG G4 too gets additional storage space, with buyers entitled to 100GB of free Google Drive storage for a period of two years.

LG has given a lot of thought to the photography department. The G4 features a 16-megapixel camera at the back with laser autofocus, optical image stabilization, f /1.8 aperture, dual-tone dual LED flash, and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

The Galaxy S6 too features a 16-megapixel camera at the back with autofocus, f/1.9 aperture and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

The One M9+, on the other hand, features a 20.7-megapixel camera at the back with Duo camera setup. The primary camera features BSI sensor, autofocus, f/2.2, and 4K video recording capabilities, accompanied by a depth sensor. Up front, HTC has opted for a 4-Ultrapixel camera.

The three smartphones are big enough to easily last a day on a single charge. But the LG G4 is at an advantage here since it has the biggest battery 3,000mAh and it is also removable. Furthermore, it supports wireless charging and comes with fast charging capabilities as well, wherein users can charge the battery from zero to 60 percent in just 30 minutes.

The three smartphones run on Android Lollipop out-of-the-box wrapped under their respective UIs. The LG G4 however runs on the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop wrapped under LG UX 4.0. The new UI comes with proprietary features like KnockCode, and Knock On, as well as features like Smart Alert, Smart Board, and camera-centric apps like Quick Shot and Expert Camera mode among others.

While all three smartphones boast LTE support, and top-of-the-line Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, the LG G4 has an advantage of featuring a dual-SIM card slot. Furthermore, both the SIM card slots support 4G networks.

The Galaxy S6 and the One M9+ both come with a fingerprint scanner integrated into the physical home button up front. The LG G4 however misses out on this feature. Furthermore, the Galaxy S6 also comes with a heart rate monitor located under the rear camera.
