LG G6 will not launch in China: Report

LG reportedly has less than one percent share in the Chinese market.

China the biggest smartphone market in the world, is reportedly set to get a strikethrough in LG s list of operating markets, thanks to the depleting share and the company s recent decision to skip launching its latest flagship smartphone LG G6. Despite being the third-largest smartphone vendor in the US, China has been cold to the company where its market share is alarmingly low. According to a report on Digitimes, LG may not launch its latest G6 in the China market, and this could also mark the company s complete exit from the market. This is attributed to the heavy losses incurred from the handset business. Based on Strategy Analytics report, LG held less than 0.1 percent market share in China in 2016. Besides a low market share, China itself is grappling with a saturated smartphone market. According to a report in 2016, growth in the local smartphone market has been been roughly 2 percent. Moving away from the Chinese market is believed to help LG focus on other major markets including Korea, US, and Europe. What is attributed to the company s poor performance is the immense popularity and market share local players such as OPPO and Vivo have in China. These local manufacturers have not only overpowered other makers who aim to have business in the country but have also established a strong foothold in growing economies such as India where the focus is on affordable and stylish smartphones. The only international brands which seem to fare well in China are Apple and Samsung, primarily owing to their significantly higher brand value. ALSO READ: LG G6 hands-on and first impressions

The LG G5 did not do all that well in the market, and the company might opt to make up last year by taking wiser choices this time around. The LG G6 is considered as one of the best Android smartphones out there at the moment, and it will almost certainly do better for the company than its predecessor. Next step for LG is choosing launch markets really carefully, LG s smartphones are quite popular in some market, like in the US, where LG is the third-largest smartphone manufacturer, but in other markets, such as China, LG is not doing well at all.

LG is yet to officially confirm whether the G6 will skip China or the company will exit the market completely. To help recall, the LG G6 is successor to last year s modular G5 smartphone but lacks the modular functionality. It features a 5.7-inch QHD+ ‘Full-Vision’ display and is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. On the photography a 13-megapixel dual rear camera setup and 5-megapixel front facing camera support. It is fuelled by a 3,300 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support. It runs Android 7.1 Nougat with LG UX 6.0 layered above. Connectivity options include Type-C support, 4G LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth and USB support.
