LG Gram, one of the thinnest and lightest Windows laptop in the market, could soon add a version with 17-inch display. The Gram has been seen as the competitor to Apple MacBook Air with its thin bezel design allowing for a larger display in a compact chassis. LG currently offers the Gram with three display sizes – 13.3-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch but an FCC filing has revealed that there could be a 17-inch variant out in the market soon.
LG could unveil the 17-inch version of its Gram at CES 2019 in January. The laptop would arrive at a time when most laptop manufacturers have given up on designing devices with larger display. Even Apple has discontinued its 17-inch MacBook Pro and the device got its last update in 2012. It is not granted that LG is indeed planning a 17-inch version of its Gram laptop.
The FCC filing only shows US certification for computers with model numbers “17Z990,” “17ZD990,” “17ZB990,” “17ZG990,” and “LG17Z99”. In the past, LG has been consistent with model numbers for its laptops where the first two numerals suggested the display. For instance, the LG Gram 13-inch models had model numbers starting with the number “13” and it seems safe to assume that these model numbers mean a 17-inch laptop under Gram branding is on the way.
According to FCC filing, the laptop will grow in terms of display but offer same array of ports. There is mention of three full-size USB ports, one HDMI, one microSD, one USB Type-C and a headphone jack, a port selection similar to one found on 15-inch LG Gram models. One of the huge advantage with having a 17-inch Gram model will be a device with large display without the corresponding weight of such a device.

The laptop market has not seen a lot of revolutionary design or form factor lately. If LG ends up building such a laptop then we might end up seeing new use cases for a laptop with larger display that does not really weight much or takes a bigger footprint. One more advantage the 17-inch model will have is battery life, as it has been the case with every preceding LG Gram laptop. If LG does launch this laptop at CES then expect it to arrive with Intel’s 8th generation processors and fastest SSD storage option.
