At the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017, LG will be announcing its anticipated G6 smartphone. However, ahead of the event, the company has reportedly filed trademarks for a couple of G6-related names. It has been reported that the company has trademarked over eight such names, making G6 sound like a series in itself. Also Read - iPhone selling in LG stores? It has been discovered that LG has trademarked G6 smartphone names including G6 Compact, G6 Lite, G6 Hybrid, G6 Prix, G6 Forte, G6 Fit, G6 Young, and G6 Sense. Now, adding to the list is G6 One and G6 M, GSMArena notes. Not all of these could prove to be smartphone variants. For example, the G6 Fit could also refer to an app or a fitness wearable compatible with the smartphone. However, the G6 Compact, Lite, and M (for Mini) could refer to other variants differing in terms of display size. It is to be noted that not all trademarks make it to the final product. However, given that LG has done something similar in the past, it won t be unusual to see cheaper variants of the upcoming flagship smartphone. To recall, the company has introduced affordable variants including LG G5 SE, LG G3 s and the LG G Pro Lite. Also Read - This Qualcomm chip bug affects around 30 percent of phones globally: Report
The LG G6 is expected to be a high-end device that will be a successor to the G5 but won t come with modular features. LG is believed to have taken this measure owing to the lack of response its first modular smartphone received. Additionally, what is also expected to be the reason behind the failure of LG G5 is that soon after it launched, Lenovo-owned Motorola introduced its Moto Z smartphone which comes with Moto Mods which are essentially snap-on accessories that enhance the features on the smartphone such as camera, battery, and sound. As the Moto Z offered a more user-friendly modular smartphone experience, takers for the LG G5 with swappable components were evidently less.
LG G6 specifications and features
In terms of specifications, the LG G6 is expected to boast a bezel-less display. This week, LG teased the smartphone via its MWC event invite which features the same homescreen as seen in the LG G5, but with a title Big Screen , suggesting a near-bezel less display. It is expected that it will feature a 5.7-inch quad HD+ display offering 1440 2880 pixels resolution with 564 ppi and an aspect ratio of 18:9. It will be further optimized for multi-tasking and support dual-screen.
The LG G6 is further likely to house the Snapdragon 821 processor. It was earlier rumored that it will house the latest Snapdragon 835 processor, but given that Samsung intends to save the advanced chipsets for its anticipated Galaxy S8 smartphone, other manufacturers are apparently switching to other chipsets. With Snapdragon 821 at its heart, the LG G6 is expected to come with 6GB of RAM. It is unclear how much internal storage the smartphone will come packed with.
For photography, it is expected that the LG G6 will come with a dual rear camera module with a pair of 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras. Although it won t come with modular functionalities, but it is expected to house a removable battery which will support Quick Charge 4.0 that is claimed to provide power for up to five hours with five minutes of charging. It might also come with support for wireless charging.
Other features expected to come with the LG G6 include IP68-certification for water and dust resistance, USB Type-C support, and fingerprint sensor. ALSO READ: LG G6 MWC invite teases near bezel-less display; leaked cases give closer look at design
In one of its latest G6 teasers, LG has suggested that the upcoming smartphone will feature a virtual assistant of its own, which will be less artificial and more intelligent in nature. In the past, there have been reports about LG G6 being the first non-Pixel smartphone to come preinstalled with the Google Assistant. After Apple s Siri and Samsung s rumored Bixby virtual assistants, manufacturers are now focusing more on the growing industry standard of having digital assistants built-in their smartphones.
Furthermore, the LG G6 is likely to come equipped with heat pipes for improved cooling. In light of the Note 7 fiasco, manufacturers are investing more into device safety and also relying on older but tested and safe designs to avoid making dangerous products. The heat pipe technology lowers the temperature of the processor by some 6-10 percent by dispersing heat and helping prevent it from reaching the battery cell. In terms of pricing, earlier reports have indicated that the LG G6 will be priced lower than the G5. However, there have also been contradictory reports suggesting it will be priced the same as the predecessor, at around $500 (approximately Rs 34,000) to $600 (approximately Rs 40,000). We will have to wait for the official unveiling on February 26 to ascertain the company s plans about the variants and sales of the LG G6.
