LG Watch Sport, Watch Style Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches leaked

Android Wear 2.0 is scheduled to debut on February 9.

Like how the Nexus partnership worked, Google has now tied up with LG to bring the first smartwatches powered by the new Android Wear 2.0 operating system. Together LG and Google will be releasing the LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style. As learnt from a tweet shared by famous leakster Evan Blass, the smartwatches and the new OS are scheduled to be launched on February 9. Additionally, according to some marketing material shared with VentureBeat, the smartwatches will go on sale from the next day in US, however its availability in India is still unknown. These smartwatches were first reported in July last year, when it was speculated that Google was working on two Nexus smartwatches running on the new Android Wear OS, carrying the codename Angelfish and Swordfish. Now from the details that were leaked back then, they pretty much match the new details that have been leaked by Blass.

It has come to light now that the LG Watch Sport will feature 14.2mm thick dial, and will come in titanium and dark blue, while the LG Watch Style would be more chic with a 10.8mm thick dial. The LG Watch Style will come with swappable straps, and will be available in titanium, silver, and rose gold. Both the smartwatches will feature circular, plastic OLED displays.

While the kind of display used on both the devices would be the same, the LG Watch Sport will feature a larger, higher-resolution screen, with 1.38-inches wide display with 480×480 resolution, as compared to LG Watch Style’s 1.2-inch display with 360×360 resolution. Additionally, the Sport is also equipped with 768MB of RAM, as compared to Style’s 512MB of RAM. Although the internal storage is 4GB for both the devices, the Sport is fuelled with a larger 430mAh battery versus Style’s 240mAh one. Looking at the specification, it is only safe to assume that while LG Watch Style would be sleeker and would come in more color options, the LG Watch Sport would probably be the flagship device. Moving on to some of the similarities between both the smartwatches, the two feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and the Sport model throws in cellular connectivity (with both 3G and LTE data) as well as GPS and NFC, which will allow the watch to take advantage of Android Wear 2.0’s Android Pay capability.

In addition to that, both the smartwatches will be iOS compatible. Interestingly, along with the iOS compatibility the timepieces share another commonality with the Apple Watch, which is the digital crown that features on the LG watches, that facilitates navigation. Also, the displays are touch sensitive, and boast handwriting recognition.

Other prominent features on the new smartwatches include Google Assistant integration and water and dust resistance (IP68 and IP67 certifications for the Sport and Style, respectively). The Sport also comes with a heart rate sensor and, thanks to its cellular capabilities, it is capable of untethered telephony with the same phone number as a user’s primary handset.

Also, do note that in addition to being preloaded on these and other upcoming smartwatches, Android Wear 2.0 will also be pushed out as an upgrade to select legacy watches already available in the market.
