Alongside its flagship LG V40 ThinQ smartphone, LG has also introduced a new smartwatch that brings a unique perspective to this segment. LG Watch W7 takes a huge departure from the design that we have seen on other wearables from the company and brings hybrid design to the wrist. Instead of building a mechanical watch with some fitness functionality, LG has built an actual smartwatch with few mechanical functions on top of it.

The LG Watch W7 runs features a 1.2-inch touchscreen display and runs Google’s Wear OS 2.1 like many other smartwatches in the market. However, LG has added mechanical hands on top of the screen to create a more natural watch-like user experience. The company says it worked with a company called Soprod in order to design the watch’s mechanical functions and movements necessary to enable the hands.

“In addition to keeping accurate time, the mechanical hands also display additional information such as altimeter, barometer, stopwatch, timer and compass directions,” LG says about the mechanical element of the Watch W7. Aside from this unique mechanical hands, the LG Watch W7 is similar to every other Wear OS-based smartwatch in the market.

LG Watch W7: Specifications and Price

The LG Watch W7 looks like a traditional watch with circular face, and a display that measures 1.2-inches. It is powered by Qualcomm’s outgoing Snapdragon 2100 Wear platform, and is rated to last for up to two days. Those mechanical hands will keep ticking for up to 100 days on a charge using the power reserve. It means the watch will function like a normal watch days after the battery dies down.

The LG Watch W7 features a crown and two buttons on its right side and uses a standard 22mm watch band. LG has customized the interface to ensure that the mechanical hands do not come in the way of user experience. Users can hold the top-right button to move the on-screen content up higher and make the hands go flat or horizontal. It lacks heart-rate sensor, GPS or LTE, making it not suitable for those looking for a fitness packed wearable.

Watch: Apple Watch Series 4 First Look

LG Watch W7 comes with 4GB memory, and has 768MB of RAM to run Google’s Wear OS. It is IP68 water and dust resistant, and includes quartz movement for the watch functionality. It also lacks more smartwatch-centric features like NFC for Google Pay and at a retail price of $449, seems interesting but does not go where Apple Watch Series 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch are headed.
