Want to try out Android P Beta? Here are the phones you can install it on now

The full roll-out of Android P is still at least a couple of months away, but developers and advanced users can get a sneak preview now on any of these smartphones.

Google releases a new version of Android every year around September or October, and the launch usually coincides with the latest phones from Google. A few years ago, it used to be the Nexus line-up, but that’s now been replaced by the Pixel. Furthermore, the first devices to get the new software are usually Google’s own devices, with manufacturers rolling out software updates later. However, that approach has changed this year, and users of phones other than the Google Pixel line-up have reason to rejoice. Also Read - Your Window PC can now run Android apps

This year, apart from a strong focus on Project Treble (which will allow manufacturers to quickly roll-out core system updates), Google has also opened up the Android P Beta program to smartphones outside of its Pixel line-up. If you own any of a select list of smartphones, you can try out the Android P Beta today. Keep in mind that the Android P Beta software is extremely unstable and experimental, which can hamper your ability to use the smartphone to its full potential. Here’s the list of smartphones that are eligible to get a sneak preview of Android P right now. Also Read - Jio-Google partnership: From JioPhone Next to new 5G collaboration and more

Google Pixel / Google Pixel XL

The first smartphones in Google’s refreshed approach towards its own smartphones, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL were launched in late 2016 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC on board. The oldest of the devices that are eligible for the Android P Beta, these two smartphones from Google are still popular among Android purists.

Google Pixel 2 / Google Pixel 2XL

The Google Pixel 2 and 2XL were launched in late 2017, and are currently the top-end devices from Google today. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, the phones were launched with Android Oreo out-of-the-box. Thanks to stock Android and Project Treble built-in, the phones can be used to try out the Android P Beta today and are the most popular choice for app developers, since they run the most stable and usable version of the beta available today.

Essential Phone

Andy Rubin’s claim to fame is being the inventor of the Android operating system, but he recently forayed into the business of building hardware with Essential. The Essential Phone hasn’t enjoyed much success in the market, but its near-stock purist approach to Android means that it is part of the Android P Beta program today. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, like the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

OnePlus 6

The latest smartphone from the Chinese maverick, the OnePlus 6 was announced to be a part of the Android P Beta program even before it launched, and is one of the most powerful devices currently on the program. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and comes with up to 8GB of RAM on board, making it a favorite for testing the software with enough power at your disposal.

Sony Xperia XZ2

This flagship smartphone from Sony, the Xperia XZ2 isn’t available in India, but is on sale in some markets around the world. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and features a high dynamic range (HDR) display, the only phone on the list of Android P Beta compatible devices to do so.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S was one of the first phones to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and has its screen stretch all the way to the top edge of the phone. The unique front camera placement at the bottom is a major talking point when it comes to this phone, and you can try out the Android P Beta now if you have this device.

Nokia 7 Plus

Apart from devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800-series chipsets, even some smartphones powered by the second-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC are eligible to try out the Android P Beta. The first of these devices is the Nokia 7 Plus, which comes from new Nokia brand licensee HMD Global and is the only Android One device on the list.

Oppo R15 Pro

With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC on board, the Oppo R15 Pro features a similar screen and design to the OnePlus 6, but with mid-range specifications under the hood. The phone is popular in the Chinese market and comes with a 6.28-inch AMOLED screen. Users can try out the Android P Beta on this phone now.

Vivo X21 / X21 UD

The Vivo X21 is a unique addition to the list, thanks to its being the world’s first production smartphone with an under-display fingerprint sensor. This will be of interest to developers to see how the under-display fingerprint sensing technology will work with the latest version of Android, and hence the phone is eligible for the Android P Beta program.
