Smartphones and tablets these days are powerful enough to do most of the common tasks one does on a PC or a tablet. But one of the biggest pain point most face is typing on a tiny touchscreen, which deters most users, yours truly included. One solution is to have Bluetooth keyboards but they tend to be tiny and cramped, which might not give the best user experience. That was my biggest apprehension when I started using the Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard. Priced at approximately Rs 2,000 (depending on where you buy it from), the Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard instantly draws attention with its compact size. The keyboard is almost half the size of an A4 sheet of paper and is comparable to the keyboard area most laptops have. The size is perfect for using it on an airplane’s seat tray, if you plan to type while traveling. Despite a plastic build, the keyboard feels extremely sturdy and weighs slightly over 400 grams with the battery included. This is not a flimsy keyboard.
While most of the keyboards have chicklet style keys, the Logitech keyboard has round keys. While many prefer the former, keys on K380 are well spread out for a very compact keyboard, and ensure you make minimum errors while fast typing.
The upper row has important Function keys, which also double up as shortcuts for various functions such as multitasking, homescreen, volume increase, decrease and mute, and even change tracks while listening to music. One of the main features of the K380 is that it automatically maps keys to supported functions and shortcuts depending on the OS you are using. The feature allows you to easily navigate between your applications on your mobile phone irrespective of the OS it is running.
It s highly unlikely you will be able to do furious burst of typing on this keyboard but still you can type at relatively fast pace. I will recommend you to have the auto correct on in your mobile device for ensuring you have minimum errors while typing. It took couple of days for me to adjust and get familiar to the keyboard. For those who have smaller hands may not take this much of time to adjust.
One of my major pet peeves while using the keyboard was the keys are not backlit, which makes it difficult to type in the dark. Another thing missing is a system to hold the phone in place. Logitech has another model, the K480 that has a slot for propping up the smartphone.
One the main highlights of the Logitech K380 is the multi-device support. The keyboard is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 or later, Mac OS 10.10 or later, Chrome OS, Android 3.2 or later, iOS 5 or later and Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation.
You can pair the keyboard with up to three devices via Bluetooth at the same time. Keys 1, 2 and 3 also double up as toggle between the paired devices, so you can shift from one device to another on the fly. I tested this feature with my iPhone 6 and a HTC Desire 820s. Switching between the paired devices is quite fluid and works flawlessly, living up to its multi-device moniker.
The keyboard is powered by two AAA batteries, which Logitech claims would last for two years! Even if it lasts for a few months, it is pretty impressive. The best thing is that AAA batteries are available easily and you can swap them if they run out of juice.
Overall, the Logitech K380 is quite impressive and makes sense for those who are looking for compact keyboard to work with their mobile devices. For Rs 2,000, the Logitech K380 is value for money accessory for your smartphone or tablet.
