Internet security solutions provider eScan has released its latest threat report for the month of June 2018 highlighting some alarming findings. According to the report, Maharashtra was at the top of the list for most Ransomware attacks in the month while highlighting the need for better cybersecurity. For the people who don t know what a Ransomware attack is, it is when a cybercriminal infects a computer system with a malicious piece of software and encrypts the data of the user on that system. The criminal then locks the system down asking for money or other aid of financial aid in a particular period of time while threatening that the victim will lose their data if they fail to comply. According to the list, Maharashtra receives 56 percent of total Ransomware attacks that were aimed at India in June 2018. This development is serious and should be a cause for concern because India is the fifth most attacked country in the World and the third most attacked in Asia. The report went on to point that 20.77 percent of Ransomware attacks were recorded around the world in the month of June and India recorded 22.94 percent Ransomware attacks in the same month. The report went on to point that the reason for such high percentage of attacks aimed at India is because of how quickly the country made a switch to cashless after the demonetization back in 2016. With such rapid shift, it is obvious that not everyone is aware of precautions that they need to take to defend themselves against virus and ransomware attacks. Cybercriminals want to take advantage of this situation by increasing the number of attacks on innocent internet users.
Another reason for the increase in the number of attacks is the ease of access to internet-enabled mobile devices and cheaper internet opening up a larger population to cyber attacks. eScan advised Internet users to ensure that they are regularly updating the operating system and anti-virus program on their devices that they use to access the Internet to guard against such attacks. The report also urged users to upgrade their older devices while maintaining a backup of important data that they don t want to lose in any circumstance.
According to the report, eScan placed Delhi on second place with 13 percent ransomware attacks while Gujarat followed on the third spot with 12 percent. Telangana and Tamil Nadu came on the fourth and fifth spot with 9 percent attacks.
