If you have been using Facebook from the very beginning, you would remember how Facebook never had any concept feeds. All it had was a bunch of profiles, groups and communities, where people could just jump from one profile to another, see posts on groups. But unlike the present Facebook, there was no way to know what your friends were seeing or what they were liking, who was tagging them, unless you checked went to their profile. Then, ten years ago, News Feed was born, and the face of Facebook changed forever. Remembering how important News Feed is to Facebook s existence now, CEO Mark Zuckerberg put up a lengthy post on his official account. He shared with people on Facebook how News Feed is a program that truly worked in Facebook s favor, and something like it had never been created before. Presently, Facebook claims to have over 1.13 billion monthly active users, and the News Feed works in a personalized manner for each one of them. Technically, News Feed is one of the most advanced systems we’ve built. For more than 1 billion people every day, it considers everything your friends are posting and all of the media content you might be interested in, it considers how much you might care about updates from each person or interest, and then it tries to show you what you’ll find most important. Nothing like it has ever been built before, Zuckerberg wrote. Also Read - Facebook is finally bringing 'smart glasses' in collaboration with Ray-Ban
However, quite interestingly, Zuck also mentioned how in the beginning, users completely rejected the idea of News Feed, and they all protested for Facebook to roll back the update. He said there were literally people protesting outside the Facebook office, expressing anger against the new feature. Back in 2006, days after Facebook rolled out the feature update with News Feed integration, people completely rejected the idea saying it violated their privacy and the new feature ought to be scrapped. A campaign was started across the world, which asked all Facebook users to boycott the social networking platform on September 12, 2006. The campaign stated that the News Feed was the playground for stalkers. However, Facebook stood its ground and continued with the feed on its platform, reassuring people that the feed would not broadcast their activity, but only share what they do and post with the people they like.
And now, 10 years later, Zuckerberg in his post proudly wrote, With News Feed, all of a sudden you could share with all your friends at once. And you could see what was happening with all your friends in one place. News Feed was the first real social feed. It was such a fundamental idea that now, 10 years later, every major social app has its own equivalent of News Feed. Also read: Facebook faces $200 million loss after SpaceX rocket explosion
Even now, after the News Feed has gelled as the backbone of the social media platform, Facebook continually has been upgrading the feature to make it more and more personalized for a user. Facebook had recently announced the introduction of a new algorithm that tweaked the News Feed and focused more on family and friends. In other words, Facebook will show posts from a user s friends and family closer to the top, ensuring that they did not miss anything that was important to them.
Also, after incessantly being blamed for tampering with the topics that trend on its News Feed, a few weeks ago, Facebook increased the automation of its Trending Topics section. The increased automation will no longer require Facebook s employees to manually write descriptions for trending topics, instead a more algorithmically driven process has been adopted.
