Good Evening. Its D-day for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is preparing to testify before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committee. He is widely expected to be grilled by the Senators on topics ranging from data privacy and Russian influence in the US election held in 2016. Zuckerberg might be feeling he has fewer friends in the Hill and media reports suggest he has been asked to stay cool even though he will be sitting in a hot seat.

A year back, it was not likely to happen and Facebook was in a position to send its executives instead for testimony. Now, the times are difficult for the social media giant and it could get worse depending on what Zuckerberg tells the senators. More on Zuckerberg and his testimony below. In other tech news, Google launched its Home smart speakers in India as the battle to capture home intensifies with Amazon. The Google Home Mini and Google Home come with an attractive price tag and will be available via Flipkart (you probably knew that).

Apple has always been the first to debut new technology on smartphones and see it being copied by Chinese smartphone makers. However, in 2019, Apple could take cues from Huawei and launch a smartphone with triple camera setup. Yes, there is a new leak of OnePlus 6, which sets the tone for ongoing hype. Here is a rundown of everything you might have missed from the world of technology:

Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress

Facebook’s 33-year old CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before the US Congress today. The testimony is expected to begin at 11.45PM IST and will see Zuckerberg imply the positive effect of the platform he co-founded on users around the world and then apologize for what happened on his platform in the last two years. The US Senators are expected to ask questions around Cambridge Analytica and how it went out of Facebook’s notice.

The most crucial questions could be around Facebook’s data practice and what it plans to do to protect user data going forward. One of the themes will be Facebook’s support for Honest Ads Act, which will make it mandatory for political ads on the platform to be disclosed to authorities. Zuckerberg’s testimony could call for similar testimony from CEO of Google, Twitter and other tech companies as they embark on new technologies like AI and machine learning.

Google Home launched in India

Ok Google, Play music by AR Rahman. Yes, starting today you can do just that in your home. Google has officially launched its smart speakers named Google Home and Google Home Mini in India. The Google Home Mini is priced at Rs 4,499 while the standard Google Home is priced at Rs 9,999 and will be available exclusively from Flipkart.

Google Home Mini is available in two colors – Charl and Charcoal while the Google Home will only be available in Chark, with Coral arriving at a later stage. Google Home smart speakers are powered by Google Assistant and it will be able to supplement an user’s life by delivering answers and controlling smart devices around your home. In order to counter Google Home, Amazon has announced discount on its Echo range of speakers.

Apple planning iPhone with triple camera

Apple could follow on the footsteps of Huawei and launch a smartphone with triple camera system. A new report says Apple will add a third lens to its existing dual lens system in order to improve zoom capability of the smartphone.

Apple is not known for copying anyone but addition of a third sensor seems validated especially for added zoom functionality. Apple launched its first smartphone with dual camera setup with iPhone 7 Plus in 2016. The new information should be taken with a grain of salt since Apple might have other camera tricks up its sleeve for next year.

OnePlus 6 front panel leak

OnePlus 6 has once again leaked, this time revealing the front panel of the smartphone. OnePlus 6 will feature a notched display like smartphones from Oppo and Vivo. The company has already confirmed and the new leak shows entire front of the smartphone for the first time.

Another interesting element is that this particular picture seems to have been created for DxOMark suggesting the smartphone will join the growing list of brands touting the rating for their camera. OnePlus 6 will need to have an incredible camera if it hopes to dethrone Huawei P20, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, which all have improved camera setup.

Huawei P20 Pro has OIS on all three image sensors

Speaking of Huawei P20 Pro, iFixit has discovered that the smartphone features optical image stabilization on all the three image sensors. At the event, Huawei did not detail OIS on its triple lens system and claimed that its AI system is more capable to shoot stabilized videos. The teardown by iFixit has revealed that all the three sensors at the back of Huawei P20 Pro support OIS.

As observed in our camera review, the results are mixed and the stabilization is not definitely in the league of Google Pixel 2, Galaxy S9 or iPhone X. There is a possibility that Huawei has added OIS in order to stabilization with future software update.

Google India appeals against CCI fine

Google has reportedly filed an appeal against Competition Commission of India’s verdict with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). The appeal is against CCI’s verdict in February where the watchdog fine Google Rs 1.36 billion for abuse of its market dominance.

The watchdog was investigating Google since 2012 after matchmaking website Bharat Matrimony and a not-for-profit organization, Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) filed complaint against search giant. The CCI said Google gives prominent position to its own services on search results, which affects the business of other services wanting to be discovered through search engine like Google.
