MediaTek MT6779 with Cortex-A75 spotted on benchmarking platform, could be Helio X40

The platform could very well be MediaTek's first to use 7nm fabrication node.

When it comes to Android smartphones, Qualcomm’s SoCs are undeniably the most popular choice, with majority of smartphones being powered by a Snapdragon chipset. However, other options are also there, with one being Taiwan-based MediaTek.

MediaTek’s SoCs are often found in a majority of budget and mid-range Android smartphones. Now, it seems that the company is working on a new chipset, and may launch it soon.

An unannounced MediaTek chipset was recently listed on Geekbench, Gizmochina reports.  Having model identifier k79v1_64 and most likely MT6779, the SoC scored 2,025 in single-core performance, and 6,831 in multi-core performance. These scores are 35 percent higher than the ones managed by MediaTek Helio P60. The report further notes that the chipset, which has eight cores clocked at 2.0 GHz could have a Cortex-A75 CPU.

If the official figures from ARM (developer of Cortex) are to be believed, Cortex-A75 has 34 percent better performance than its predecessor, the Cortex-A73. Also, this could make MT6779 the first MediaTek SoC to use the new A75 architecture.

Interestingly, as of now, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and Samsung Exynos 9820 use Cortex-A75 cores. As noted by the Gizmochina report, this means that MediaTek’s upcoming chipset could very well turn out to be the Helio X40, based on the 7nm fabrication process.

On a related note, MediaTek unveiled its Helio P70 SoC at IMC 2018. The chipset, which is apparently a better performer than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 and HiSilicon’s Kirin 710, will be first used in the Realme U1, the company’s upcoming selfie-centric smartphone.
