Chipmaker MediaTek has its eyes set on India as the country gets ready to welcome 4G connectivity next year. Speaking with the folks at Light Reading India, MediaTek s Finbarr Moynihan said that the company is working with various manufacturers and vendors to bring MediaTek powered 4G handsets to India in 2014. We expect that the next year will be critical for us. India is an exciting 4G market, Moynihan said. We are working with various handset manufacturers in the country and you will see our partners launching quality 4G devices at competitive prices in 2014.
Last week, MediaTek launched the MT6592, a true octa-core processor. On the same day Intex unveiled the i17, which is the first smartphone to be powered by this SoC and also supports 4G. Other vendors too are said to be working with the company to launch 4G-enabled handsets next year.
Moynihan further revealed that around 110 million MediaTek powered smartphones were shipped last year, and they expect to cross 200 million shipments by the end of this year.
