As we are approaching the era of 5G, handset and chipset makers have started discussing roadmap for the next technology evolution 5G. Qualcomm’s sole rival in the mobile chipset segment – MediaTek – has been quite aggressive lately. It recently launched a new chipset in the P-series for mid-range smartphones, Called Helio P70, with a dedicated AI processor.

Now, from a new report, it’s being claimed that MediaTek’s system chip (SoC) with 5G capabilities should be ready by end of next year (2019). MediaTek CEO Cai Lixing reportedly pointed out that they are working on an integrated 5G chipset, the Helio M70 5G baseband chip, and it will hit market in the first half of next year (H1, 2019), reports Gizchina.

Previously too, MediaTek had shared details about the 5G modem. In June, the company said its Helio M70 modem will be capable of reaching 5Gbps speeds, and it will be built by TSMC on a 7nm node. It mentioned that the commercial deployment of their 5G modem would start from 2019. The company also showcased a 5G prototype with a fan inside.

Since Helio M70 is a standalone modem, MediaTek is likely to come up with a mobile chipset after that, and it could easily be the second half of 2019. Having said that, we do not expect any 5G handset carrying MediaTek chipset until 2020. To remind you, the company recently demonstrated its 5G prototype for the first time, and it claims that their 5G chip architecture is quite clear.

Lixing also said MediaTek’s Reseach and Development (R&D) will take time for 5G till the end of next year and as 5G business transfer time gets closer, the company will invest more resources in 5G.

He further added that MediaTek has learned some lessons in the 4G period from a technical point of view, and its compliance with the various 3GPP 5G standards is quite accurate and active.
