Micromax has launched the Bharat 5 Pro, the first smartphone in the Bharat series with a massive battery and face unlock feature. The homegrown smartphone maker claims that the Bharat 5 Pro has 21 days battery backup.

Micromax says the Bharat range has been a success in India and the new Bharat 5 Pro will add to its success. “Usually, smartphones with great battery life either come at a higher price point or do not have great specs to offer at an affordable price point. Hence, we at Micromax have always been at the forefront of coming up with phones with extensive battery life and compelling product features, not too long ago we were the first to give our consumers a 30 days battery phone,” said Shubhodip Pal, Chief Marketing and Chief Commercial Officer, Micromax Informatics.

The Bharat 5 Pro features a 5.2-inch HD IPS display and Micromax says it has peak brightness of 400 nits with 2.5D curved glass. Powering the device is a 64-bit quad-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1.3GHz. It offers 3GB RAM and 32GB storage along with support for additional storage up to 64GB via microSD card slot.

On the camera front, Micromax has equipped the Bharat 5 Pro with a 13-megapixel rear camera capable of shooting pictures with shallow depth-of-field and bokeh effect. The main camera also supports features such as panorama, timelapse and beauty mode. There is also a 5-megapixel front camera with 83-degree wide angle lens and dedicated LED flash. The front cmaera also comes with beauty mode for improved images.

Since the launch of iPhone X last year, the face unlock feature has become a must-have for many smartphone makers. Micromax Bharat 5 Pro also supports the feature where users can unlock their device by simply looking at it. The feature is less secure than conventional biometrics like fingerprint recognition.

However, Micromax is not touting the face unlock feature as the USP but rather is calling the 5,000mAh battery as its key feature. The smartphone is claimed to last for two full days of heavy usage and has a standby time of up to 21 days. The smartphone can also act as a power bank and charge other devices via its USB port. The Bharat 5 Pro is a 4G smartphone and it is priced at Rs 7,999. The phone can be purchased via offline retail channels.
