Reliance Jio has made a strong presence in the telecom industry with its 4G VoLTE service, affordable tariffs, and now its ‘smart’ feature phone, the JioPhone. Following its announcement, the telecom industry was abuzz with competing players planning to launch new 4G VoLTE feature phones as well. Micromax’s rumored 4G VoLTE feature phone in partnership with BSNL, now has a launch time, and will be part of the company’s Bharat series. According to ET, Micromax’s entry-level 4G VoLTE feature phone, Bharat One will be launched in the first week of October amidst the festive season. The device is said to be priced around Rs 2,000. In comparison, the JioPhone is priced at Rs 1,500. Micromax’s partnership with BSNL will introduce exclusive features for the device including free voice calls. BSNL currently has 3G service only, so it’s questionable how 4G users will benefit from it. Specifications of the Bharat One phone remain scarce as of now, but Micromax promises upgrades over existing feature phones.
The company assures that Bharat One will come with a bigger display, offer stronger battery life, and better camera capabilities. At present, feature phones have screen sizes of around 2-inch, and batteries within 2,000mAh capacity. For photography, the best offering includes a 2-megapixel rear camera, and a VGA camera up front. ALSO READ: Micromax Bharat 3, Bharat 4 with Android 7.0 Nougat launched: Price, specifications
Micromax says that it has chosen this launch timeframe to tap into the festive season frenzy. Interestingly, Reliance Jio began the first delivery of its JioPhone this Sunday. Jio says that it will deliver six million devices within 15 days. With the Bharat One feature phone, Micromax also expects to compete against the JioPhone. A company executive was quoted by ET as saying, “The idea is to have a device that can give competition to Reliance s Jio Phone there is a huge market of 500 million feature phone users who would want to have more than one option.”
Other than the JioPhone, Intex also recently launched its 4G VoLTE feature phone, the Turbo+ 4G. It is priced at Rs 1,999 and comes with decent specifications other than 4G VoLTE support. JioPhone packs quite a good number of ‘smart’ features on the device. It remains to be seen how the Bharat One will compete against it.
