Hot on the heels of the Smarty A54, Micromax has also launched the Smarty A65 4.3 in India. The Android smartphone is available for Rs 4,999 on Flipkart. As far as we are aware, this is the first Android smartphone from Micromax that runs on Spreadtrum’s chipset after the company invested $10 million in Micromax last year.
On the specs front, the Smarty A65 sports a 4.3-inch WVGA display, which is a rarity at this price point. It runs on a 1GHz single-core Cortex A5 processor from Spreadtrum, a 2-megapixel camera with flash and Wi-Fi support. It has 190MB of internal user memory along with 512MB RAM and Micromax’s official product page claims it has 4GB ROM as well. It also claims it has a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Like most smartphones at this range, it does not support 3G but has Wi-Fi connectivity along with GPRS/EDGE. Of course, it has dual-SIM support. It runs on Android Gingerbread 2.3.5, which is at par for most Android smartphones at this price point.
We believe that with the Smarty A65 4.3 and the Smarty A54 Android smartphones, Micromax is targeting Nokia’s Asha range of all-touch phones, which the Finnish handset vendor is selling as smartphones. Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO, recently mentioned that these Asha ‘smartphones’ will compete with Android smartphones in the low-end segment.
