Micromax, in partnership with Google, will launch a smartphone this month priced around Rs 2,000 that will run Android Oreo (Go Edition). Android Go is an important part of Google s aim to connect the next billion Indians. Currently, decent entry-level smartphones are priced around the Rs 5,000 mark, but Google wants to bring that lower. With that in mind, it announced Android Oreo (Go Edition) that is optimized to work with smartphones featuring ultra low-level specifications.

These devices will come with features like 512MB-1GB of RAM, and as little as 8GB internal storage. Chip makers Qualcomm and MediaTek have already pledged their support for the Android Go initiative. They will also come pre-installed with Google Go apps that are essentially lightweight versions of apps like YouTube, and Gmail among others.

Interestingly, this isn t the first time we are hearing about a smartphone maker close to launching an Android Go smartphone. Last month, we heard about Nokia 1, which would be the first Android Go smartphone from HMD Global. The Nokia 1 is rumored to feature an IPS-LCD display with HD resolution, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB internal storage. It will run Android Oreo (Go Edition) out-of-the-box.
