Micromax could soon unveil a new mid-range smartphone, based on a new leak. A device, codenamed Micromax YU5, has been spotted on Geekbench website. Going by the name, it is likely to be branded as part of the Indian smartphone maker’s online-first YU sub-brand. The listing on Geekbench gives away a few key specifications of the phone, including its chipset and RAM, and was first reported by MySmartPrice.
The phone is listed as running on the Qualcomm MSM8953 SoC, which is the code name for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. Additionally, the listing suggests that the phone will have 2GB of RAM, and will run Android 8.1 Oreo. The single-core and multi-core scores of 771 and 3,823 respectively are in line with what to expect from a typical smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 625 SoC. The benchmark listing further suggests a processor clock speed of 1.8GHz, which is lower than the typical 2.0GHz clock speed of the Snapdragon 625 chipset.
Not much else is known about the phone for now, including its official name. YU5 is likely to be an internal code name for the product, and the final device that is launched could have an entirely different marketed name. However, the choice of chipset is surprising for a new phone considering that the Snapdragon 625 is now well over a year old. However, its continued use by manufacturers, including Xiaomi on the Redmi Note 5 and Vivo on the V9, indicates that it’s still a capable chipset even for 2018.

Micromax, once in second position when it came to smartphone shipments in India, has since fallen from its dominant rank thanks to strong competition from Chinese smartphone makers. With the entry of Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, Micromax has failed to make a significant mark on the smartphone space in recent times. However, the home-grown smartphone maker is anything but gone, seeing as how its smartphones are still making the news.
