In May last year, Microsoft launched Windows 10 S, a lightweight operating system and competitor to Google Chrome OS. The education-oriented operating system is a streamlined version of Windows 10, designed for battery life, superior performance and security. With the next big Windows 10 update around the corner, Microsoft is reportedly making some big changes, and Windows 10 S OS is going away.

The restricted version of the operating system could only run apps shipped by Windows, and those downloaded from Windows Store, so users don’t have to worry about malware attacks and other vulnerabilities. This also means that you won’t be able to install the EXE files that you find on the internet.

While Windows 10 S was built to compete with Google’s Chrome OS, it received a dull reception, with many claiming that it limited the versatility of Windows OS. First reported by Windows blogger Paul Thurrott, Windows 10 S is going away as an operating system. He also mentioned that Windows 10 Home editions will be split into Windows 10 Home Advanced, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 Home in S Mode.

First devise running on Windows 10 Home Advanced are expected to show up in May, but as of now, there is no clarity on what ‘Advanced’ means, and how it will be different from other versions. Windows 10 Home, on the other hand, will get an S Mode feature, something that was already included in Windows 10 Pro.

After turning on S mode, Windows 10 Home will work just like Windows 10 S OS. Which means, it will only allow to run Windows apps that were preinstalled, and the ones that were downloaded from the Windows Store.

Wondering what will happen to the laptops already shipped with Windows 10 S OS? Well, Thurrott suggests that Microsoft will allow users to upgrade from Windows 10 Home S to Windows 10 Home for free. However, to switch from Windows 10 Pro S to Pro will cost $49 (approximately Rs 3,150).
