Microsoft has finally started seeding the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade to the existing Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 8.1. The beta version of the Windows 10 Mobile was made available to developers and to users who sign up for Windows Insiders program. After intensive testing for months on a range of smartphones, the final build is now ready and being released to compatible smartphones.

The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade brings a host of new features and improvements. Outlook and Office apps have been improved and the virtual personal assistant Cortana is now in sync with desktop version of Windows 10. Other changes come in the form of big fixes and performance improvements.

Microsoft has also released a list of smartphones that are getting the update. These include the Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia 930, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 1GB, Lumia 636 1GB, Lumia 638 1GB, Lumia 430 and Lumia 435.

Sadly, while Microsoft had earlier said that most Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 8.1 will be updated to Windows 10 Mobile; the list misses out on some popular devices. This includes the top selling Lumia 520, the Lumia 1020 with 41-megapixel camera, the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 925 to name a few.

How to upgrade your compatible Lumia smartphone to Windows 10 Mobile
While software updates are usually easy to install from settings and update phone, this time around Microsoft has gone with a slightly different approach. To begin with you’ll need to download an app called Update Advisor from Microsoft’s Windows Store. Open the app, check ‘Enable Windows 10 upgrade’ and tap on Next. It will confirm the device and prompt that its ready to upgrade.

Once the above procedure is done, head over to Settings > Phone Update > Check for updates. Once the over-the-air (OTA) update is available it will prompt you to download. Once the update is downloaded, it will take anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes to complete the upgrade. While you won’t lose any data during the upgrade, we’d recommend you to take a backup of your photos, videos, contacts and other files, just to be on a safer side.
