Microsoft has just announced the launch of Visual Search capabilities for its existing mobile apps. The company stated that this move is the result of building upon the existing visual technology that is part of its Bing search engine. Visual Search will allow users to search the internet directly using their camera. According to a detailed blog post by the company, users can use visual search for shopping and learn more about the objects in the real world in addition to the usual search functionality.
According to the blog post by the Bing Team, this new functionality is rolling out on the Bing app for Android and iOS devices. Though, the rollout is limited to the United States at the time of writing. Bing app is not the only app receiving the Visual Search capability as it will also arrive in Microsoft Launcher and Microsoft Edge for Android users in the US. There is no Microsoft Launcher for iOS but Microsoft Edge users on iOS and Bing.com users will have to wait for some time for this new feature. For getting started, users just need to click the “camera button” in the respective apps.

The blog post also gave a number of examples to give us a hint on what we can expect from Visual Search feature. Users can use the function to identify any landmark or flower or any other object around to get more information and relevant links.
Users can also “shop” for things like home furnishings or fashion including clothes with the help of Visual Search. This feature is similar to what Google Lens is but it looks like it has fewer features on paper when compared to the offering by Google. It seems like Microsoft is aware of that as it concluded the blog post by adding that it will be adding more capabilities to the feature in coming months.
