At its event earlier this week, Microsoft showcased a new preview of Windows 10 for desktops and demonstrated many of its new features. The company also announced that it will be releasing the said preview to the public in a week. To everyone’s surprise, the “January Build” which is also being called the Build 9926 is now available for download as ISO file to both “Fast” and “Slow” rings of Windows Insider participants.
The latest build features the digital voice assistant service Cortana, an improved Start menu, a new Settings app, and improved wireless connectivity options. With the new build, users will also get new Photos and Maps applications, as well as improved Xbox app and Windows Store beta.
Cortana is available on the taskbar, allowing users to search in Windows 10 for apps, settings, files, and search the web. Users will be able to access Cortana with their voice by clicking the microphone icon. Cortana will allow users to check the weather, sports, finance information, and other content from Bing. There’s also an option to enable hands-free use of Cortana by saying “Hey Cortana.”
Start menu has received some big changes as well, now letting users expand to a full-screen mode and customize the menu’s color. The company is offering more personalized features, like drag and drop and Jump Lists.

“The gap between 9879 and 9926 is the longest you should expect to see with the program, because of the holidays and the need to add and stabilize feature payloads,” Microsoft explained. “We’ll get new builds out faster moving forward – thank you for being patient with us.”
To grab the latest build, go to PC Settings -> Update and recovery -> Preview builds. Once there, click “Check now” and the download will begin. The preview of Windows 10 on phones will release in February.
