Microsoft has just removed a fake advertisement for its in-house search engine, Bing. Fake advertisements are not a new problem, but they seem to have grown over the years. However, the problematic part of this fake advertisement was that it was the first result for users who were looking to download Google Chrome as their new browser. The problem was not limited to the link or how it appeared as the top result, but it extended to how the web page appeared once users clicked on the link. The download page looked strikingly similar to the official Chrome download page.
The advertisement also redirected the users to a malicious website where the clone of the download page appeared. After tapping the download link, the web page served a malicious file to trick users into installing the program. According to ZDNet, this is not the first time that Microsoft failed to block a fake Google Chrome download advertisement. The issue was initially reported by Gabriel Landau on this Twitter. The report also added that Google Chrome was able to block the scam-looking advertisement but Microsoft Edge and Bing failed to flag the advertisement.

In response to the issue, Microsoft stated that it has removed the advertisement from Bing while banning the account of the advertiser. The company also issued a statement adding that it is committed to “protecting” its “customers from malicious content”.
The report further stated that this incident is an example of failure to properly screen advertisements before approving them instead of Microsoft trying to employ some malicious tactic to keep users from using Google Chrome.
