Microsoft is bringing its 13-inch and 15-inch Surface Book 2 laptops to more markets later this year. The Redmond-based software giant first launched its new 13-inch and 15-inch Surface Book 2 notebooks as successor to first generation Surface Book in October last year.
While the 13-inch model was available in select markets, the larger 15-inch model was only available in the US so far. Microsoft has now confirmed that Surface Book 2 will be available in 17 new countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The pre-orders for the 15-inch model in the 17 new markets starts today.
Microsoft is also bringing the Surface Book 2 to India later this year. The company has confirmed that the 13-inch and 15-inch models will be available to purchase in Bahrain, Bahrain, China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
Microsoft has separately sent out a media invite for an event in India on January 23 where it is expected to showcase the second generation Surface Book laptops. With Surface Book 2, Microsoft is fixing every noticeable flaw on the first generation machine.
The Surface Book 2 has new processors, new graphics cards and a tweaked design and the same old dynamic fulcrum hinge. While the first generation Surface Book was only available in 13-inch screen size, the Surface Book 2 is also available in a 15-inch screen size this time around.
In terms of specifications, both the Surface Book 2 models feature a 3:2 aspect ratio displays. The 13.5-inch model has a display with 3000 x 2000 pixel resolution and 267PPI pixel density while the 15-inch model has a resolution of 3240 x 2160 and 260PPI pixel density. The 13-inch Surface Book 2 (base model) is powered by a 7th generation Core i5 chipset with 8GB RAM while the 15-inch model comes with new 8th generation Core i7 CPU with 16GB RAM. Both the laptops can be purchased with either 256GB or 512GB or 1TB SSD for storage.
While the first generation Surface Book relied on integrated Intel graphics, the Surface Book 2 comes with discrete NVIDIA GPU. The 13-inch model comes with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 2GB graphics memory (not available on the base i5 model) while the 15-inch model packs a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB graphics memory. If you are a content creator then the 15-inch model offers plenty of power.
Microsoft claims the Surface Book 2 can last 17 hours on battery and last up to five hours in tablet mode. It has two USB Type-A port, one USB Type-C port, SD card slot, headphone jack and uses proprietary Surface Connect for charging. There is an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera with support for Windows Hello login.
For Microsoft, Surface hardware portfolio still remains hobby and it acts as a benchmark for its peers to innovate on the hardware front by keeping the price low. The 13.5-inch Surface Book 2 starts at $1,499 (around Rs 96,000) while the 15-inch model starts at 2,499 (around Rs 1,60,000).
