Microsoft launched Surface Book 2, its premium performance oriented laptop in India, early this week. The Surface Book 2 starts at Rs 1,37,999 and is aimed at those customers who want a powerful laptop that is also portable. Apart from performance, the Surface Book 2 also offers a unique design including a hinge that is different from anything else we have seen from PC makers before.
Microsoft Surface Book 2 is not new, it was launched in the US last year and in India, Microsoft is offering updated specifications including 8th generation Core i7 processor. By launching the Surface Book 2 in India, Microsoft is competing with Apple MacBook Pro, which has been the go-to laptop for professional users. So, if you want to buy a new premium laptop with a budget of over Rs 1 lakh, which one should you buy?
Microsoft Surface Book 2 vs Apple MacBook Pro: Design
There is no doubt that Microsoft Surface Book 2 has the most unique of the two laptops. It comes with magnesium casing and has dynamic fulcrum hinge that allows its users to take the display apart from the base. The MacBook Pro, on the other side, features aluminum unibody casing and is one of the slimmest notebook to pack a performance grade CPU.
If you like portability then MacBook Pro is the clear winner with 15mm thin chassis and starting weight of 1.37 Kg. The Surface Book 2, on the othe hand, is around 22mm thick and starts at 1.5Kg, making it a little more unwieldy. However, if you want an experience of a tablet and a laptop or a convertible then Surface Book 2 is the only performance device with such kind of flexibility.
The Surface Book 2 also comes with ports like full-size USB port, a full-size SDXC card reader and USB Type-C, making it ideal for photographers and professionals who need different types of inputs. The MacBook Pro comes with four USB Type-C ports and in order to access any other peripheral, customers need to buy a dongle.
Microsoft Surface Book 2 vs Apple MacBook Pro: Display
Both Surface Book 2 and MacBook Pro can be purchased with either 13-inch or 15-inch displays. The Surface Book 2 comes in two models, the standard model has a 13.5-inch display while a higher model features a larger 15-inch model. The 13.5-inch model supports a resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels and 3:2 aspect ratio. The 15-inch model slightly bumps that resolution to 3240 x 2160 pixels and again 3:2 aspect ratio.
Microsoft’s reasoning behind 3:2 aspect ratio display is to enable smoother content creation and make reading equivalent to that of physical paper. The 13.3-inch MacBook Pro comes with a display supporting resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels and 500 nits brightness. The 15.4-inch variant comes with a native resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels.
Both Surface Book 2 and MacBook Pro feature displays that are factory calibrated and make for a great viewing experience. These displays are particularly tuned with content creators in mind who need support for wider color gamut and 100 percent of the color profile. The new MacBook Pro also supports True Tone technology which changes the color of the display according to ambient light.
The Surface Book 2 and Apple MacBook Pro are two expensive laptops one can buy right now. Their steep price can be attributed to latest processors, improved graphics and support for solid state drives.
The Surface Book 2 can be configured with either Core i5 or Core i7 processor. The 13-inch model can be configured with up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics processor. The 15-inch model comes standard with 16GB RAM, Core i7 CPU, up to 1TB of storage and standard graphics of NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 memory.
The MacBook Pro comes integrated with Touch Bar and the 13-inch model can be configured with either 2.2GHz dual-core Core i5 or quad-core Core i5 processor. It comes with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB SSD storage. The 15-inch model can be configured with either 2.2GHz Core i7 or 6-core 2.5GHz Core i7 processor. It comes standard with 16GB of RAM and Radeon Pro 555X GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
