When Microsoft showcased its Surface tablets last month, the company made a big deal of the unique Vapor-Mag casing of the tablets. Sure, the build quality and the design language wowed the tech press, but the fact is that Microsoft is yet to produce a hardware product in great mass, apart from the Xbox, and till the consumers are wowed by the build of the tablet, the success of the Surface hangs in the balance. And related to this, The DigiTimes is reporting that Microsoft is facing production issues as the manufacturer has limited capacity to produce the casing. According to the report, Redmond had approached multiple metal chassis makers and it was estimating that the orders for the tablet could go as high as five million units by the end of 2012, but the chassis makers had to give up due to limited capacity caused by the unique manufacturing process demanded by the use of a metal composite of magnesium and aluminum, which Microsoft calls Vapor-Mag. Additionally, it has been revealed that a Chinese company, which admittedly is a second tier supplier, is conducting the manufacturing for the casing and because it is achieving such a low yield, Microsoft is paying a lot of attention to the suppliers manufacturing process.
