Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 with Intel Kaby Lake processor launched: Specifications and features

Here's all that Microsoft announced at its Surface event in China.


Regardless how absurd the timeline may seem, but soon after hosting multiple Windows conferences, Microsoft today hosted its Surface event. Contrary to expectations, the company not only announced the next iteration of its Surface laptop but also introduced an all-new Surface Pro hybrid device. Before you jump to any conclusion, this is not the Surface Pro 5, but labeled as the all-new Surface Pro. The all-new Surface Pro hybrid device features similar design language as the Surface Pro 4. With an overall slim and light form factor, there are subtle improvements under the hood. It is now powered by Intel’s seventh-generation Kaby Lake processor and features a fanless architecture. Other improvements include an enhanced color Pixel Sense display and up to 13.5 hours of battery life. It is LTE enabled and comes with Microsoft s Hello device authentication technology.

Among the key features, tablet-cum-laptop device now includes what Microsoft calls the next-generation hinge for a more comfortable studio mode. Additionally, there is a new Surface Pen to go with the hybrid device with 4096 levels of pressure and tilt sensitivity aimed at more realistic strokes for artists who use the device. There are also new Alcantara keyboards to go with the hybrid device for a more enhanced aesthetic appeal.

In terms of specifications, it boasts a 12.3-inch display and runs Windows 10. Under the hood, there is up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD. The Core i7 processor is paired with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640. It further includes 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera with Windows Hello. For connectivity, the new Surface Pro includes 1 full-size USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, headset jack, Surface Connect and microSDXC card reader. Price of the new Surface Pro start at $799 (approxiamtely Rs 51,900). There is currently no word on its India launch.

Other announcements

In addition to the new Surface laptop, Microsoft also announced the new Surface Laptop that was previously unveiled at its education event. The new laptop is also powered by Intel Core i7 processor and boasts a slim form factor.


Microsoft also extended the availability of its Surface Studio to the Chinese market. The Surface Studio will be up for pre-orders starting today until June 15. Surface Studio is Microsoft’s desktop PC targeted straight at creative professionals that turn a desktop into a studio for an enhanced designing experience. Microsoft also announced that its next-generation gaming console Project Scorpio will also be heading to China. It is expected to give out more details at the upcoming E3 event. To recall, the console features an octa-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz and is said to include 12GB of DDR5 RAM with a 326 GB/s memory bandwidth, a 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive.
