Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is said to be 'heavily redesigned' for 2019

Microsoft's next Surface Pro could bring major redesign as the devices gain traction among mainstream customers.

Microsoft is reportedly working on three new Surface devices codenamed Carmel, Libra and Andromeda. The device codenamed Carmel is believed to the next-generation Surface Pro that is not expected to arrive until mid-2019. According to a report by ZDNet, the next Surface Pro (which could be called Surface Pro 6) will bring major design changes compared to its predecessor. While it is not clear what that design change will mean, it could mean a thinner design than existing models. Microsoft has been retaining the design of older Surface models in order to keep the backward compatibility for accessories like the Type Cover and Touch Cover. Microsoft might take a leap of faith and offer a completely redesigned Surface Pro next year. The report also states that the Redmond giant is working on a refresh of Surface Pro for this fall with Intel’s 8th generation processors. There is also speculation of a Surface Laptop with Intel’s latest processors, but whether these devices will get USB Type-C port isn’t confirmed just yet.

Microsoft launched the Surface Book 2 with a USB Type-C port early this year. It is likely that all Surface devices will retain the proprietary Surface Connector for another generation along with support for USB Type-C port. The Redmond-based tech giant is also said to be working on a Surface-branded headset that could be modeled around Jabra’s Evolve series. further reports that Microsoft will debut a $400 Surface tablet to compete with Google Chromebooks and Apple’s new iPad models later this year. This device is said to be codenamed Libra. A leaked documentation revealed that the company could also debut dual display device codenamed Andromeda sometime this year.

For Microsoft, the Surface brand had a lackluster start but has gained traction among consumers with arrival of new products like Surface Laptop, Surface Pro LTE, Surface Studio and Surface Book 2. Now, the segment alone contributes around a billion dollar in revenue and the new devices could be a way for Microsoft to stay competitive in the declining PC market.
