Microsoft will be discussing the “next chapter of Windows” at its event on January 21. According to the Verge, the company will be previewing the Windows 10 for mobile at the event and release it as the developer preview later this month.

Microsoft recently published a “Phone Insider” app on the Windows Phone Store which provides “registered users the ability to participate in pre-release phone update programs offered by Microsoft.” Adding weight to its possible link with Windows 10 for Windows Phone is the mention of Windows Insider site, the same portal that lets users download Windows 10 Technical Preview for desktop.

The report further adds that Windows 10 for Windows Phone, which is also being referred as Windows Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile, will bring several capabilities of Windows RT desktop operating system. This would enable the Windows 10 mobile counterpart to utilize universal apps. From what we have heard so far, Windows 10 for Phone will offer true multi-tasking option.

Windows Phone has a big app gap problem which has been making it an unsuitable operating system for most. With universal app support and features from Windows RT, the company might be able to close this gap as it enables developers to turn their desktop applications into mobile apps with minimal efforts.

Microsoft introduced the Windows Insider program at the sidelines of Windows 10 Technical Preview. Through this program, the company enables users to suggest features they would like to see in the forthcoming updates, and submit feedback about the existing service, as well as download the preview version. So far, this mantra has worked quite well for Windows 10 desktop users, and the program’s chief recently asserted that Microsoft is serious about users’ feedback, and assured that the forthcoming updates and final version of Windows 10 may include some of the most requested features.

The Phone Insider app, however, only works for Microsoft employees as of now. The report claims that the company will open it to select users by the end of this month. We will know more on January 21.
